Everyone who owns an inside dog needs to housebreak it. The first few weeks of housebreaking dog training is the most difficult.
This is because a puppy is so naïve and innocent and really does not have the concept of right and wrong. Just as a baby, you are going to have to guide him and show him where and when he has to go potty.
Successful housebreaking requires consistency. Dogs do well with routines and if you stick to a routine your dog will be housebroken easier and sooner.
Here is when you should take your dog outside to potty:
- In the morning
- After a meal within a half hour
- After a nap
- Before bed

You do not need the dog to give you a sign when he is ready to go. Just stick to your housebreaking dog training routine and automatically take him outside or to his designated area at the above times. He will learn where he is supposed to potty and at what times.
Remember that puppies have limited bladder control similar to young children. Both puppies and older dogs can be trained to be housebroken. Puppies are more likely to have accidents, however, as well as any dog in the beginning of their training before they get used to the routine.
If you fail to take your dog outdoors and it uses the bathroom indoors, you can’t blame the dog.

Don’t punish the dog for having an accident indoors unless you catch him in the act. If the dog uses the bathroom indoors but not in his designated area and you punish him later, this will just confuse him.
During the beginning stages of dog training in housebreaking, be sure to reward your dog every time he uses the bathroom in the correct place, whether indoors or outdoors and always use positive reinforcement. When he is praised for releasing himself in these areas and not for other areas, he will get the hang of it.
