Some Must Know Tips On How to Potty Train a Puppy

If you have a puppy it’s the perfect time to begin dog training. Puppies haven’t been taught anything so far one way or another, so they are ripe for being taught commands and tricks. Anyone can learn how to potty train a puppy if they stick to a few basic guidelines and put in the time and consistency.

Even kids are capable of training puppies. Everyone knows that dogs are very loyal and eager to please. They also love attention, affection, and praise. In some ways they are like people. As people we also need attention and affection and we are more eager to do something if we know we will get praised and rewarded afterwards.

There are some important tips that anyone who wants to learn how to potty train a puppy or a grown dog should know. The first tip may sound surprising to some but it’s extremely important.

1) Exercise. All dogs need exercise (just like people do). You need to make sure your dog is getting enough exercise. Some bad behavior in dogs is simply because it’s not getting enough exercise. A bored dog that isn’t getting exercise will act out, destroy property, bark way too much, and not be able to learn very well. Even the original dog whisperer Cesar Millan’s top tip for dog training is actually exercise. He states that you have to wear out the body to get to the mind. While learning how to potty train a puppy you should always remember that a dog that has gotten a good exercise will come home ready to obey and have a good, restful sleep. He won’t go around destroying property, disturbing the neighborhood barking or urinating all over the place. The exercise a dog needs depends on its age, size, and breed. A 6 month old dog needs a lot more exercise than a 10 year old dog. A large breed dog needs more exercise than a poodle.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise starting as a puppy. Take your dog on daily walks or jogs or let the dog outside to run around and play ball in the backyard. A properly exercised dog will be much easier to train. 2) Start off early. “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a well known saying and although there is not much truth to that, it is much easier to potty train a puppy than to teach a full grown dog anything. Puppies will learn much faster. Old dogs may take a lot longer or not be able to learn at all if they are too stubborn. 3) Be Consistent. Don’t confuse the dog. Humans can easily be inconsistent so a lazy person will not learn how to potty train a puppy very well. If on Monday it’s okay for them to relieve themselves indoors, on Tuesday it’s bad and it’s okay again on Wednesday, the dog will be so confused that it will not be able to understand right from wrong. Make the rules, set a routine and stick to it as much as possible.

4) Positive Reinforcement goes a lot farther than punishment. Just like people, dogs respond better to positive reinforcement than punishment. Dogs don’t like to be hit, scared, or punished. They respond much better to praise and affection. When they do something wrong tell them No, then show them the right way. When they do something right, tell them Good boy or Good girl. Remember to never hit a puppy. This can cause harm and aggression in them. Wouldn’t you rather be praised than hit? These are 4 must know tips when learning how to potty train a puppy.
