You have to make sure your dog responds perfectly to all commands while on a leash or long line before you start her with off leash dog training.
You need to invest in four leashes with the lengths of ¼ inch to 3/8 inch soft nylon or leather that are 6-8 feet, 20 feet, 50 feet and 100 feet.
The 6-8 foot line is what you’ll use for walking and teaching your dog to heel.
You should also use a slip collar that fits around the dog’s neck and leaves at least three fingers of space between the neck and collar. The collar is very light so it will not be a distraction for her.
If she is a puppy, she may be intimidated by the collar and leash at first, so you can make a big deal when you remove the leash. This way she will recognize that not having the leash on is something positive.
As you begin the off leash dog training you should hold the leash in the right hand and keep the dog to your left.
You should keep some type of doggy treat in your hand or fingers just close enough to entice the dog to walk along side of you. Because she can smell it, she will not want to leave that hand. However, you must make sure she cannot grab it out of your hand otherwise she will bolt once the treats are gone.

Once your dog displays that she has the off leash dog training technique down, you can graduate to letting her roam away with the long line.
The 20 to 100 feet lines are to allow her to go about. When you call she should come. If she doesn’t then you have enough line by you that you can step on to prevent her from going any further.
As she gets more and more trustworthy and obedient, you may start shortening the line until it is just a 6-12 inch piece from the snap on the collar. Because she doesn’t know how long the leash is and she is used to having it, she will begin to assume that you can still get a hold of her.
Although it depends on the breed and age of a dog, it usually takes about 6 to 12 months to fully train your dog to have off leash dog training.
Just remember to have lots of patience and consistency and your dog will be trained in no time.
